The upgrade / installation of WHS 2011 on an Acer Easystore H342 is not as bad as it seems. I have had the opportunity to do it a few times. I would strongly urge not even bothering on an H340 or H341. Those two servers are just not up to the task “personally”. Let’s begin:
Chances are that you have your server installed with Windows Home Server V1 and you have decided to upgrade to ensure a little more time with your home server. I have been fortunate to find a place that sells replacement hardware for the H342. However, although the backplane is not too expensive, the motherboard is out of control. Personally, I would buy one of the “Revo Home Servers” from Acer before I even decided to get some new parts for the Easystore.
So what do we need to do? Well, first and foremost, get yourself a “[Gen3] HP MediaSmart Server VGA/PS2/Serial Debug Board“. I really suggest this to anyone considering doing this. Don’t be cheap! This items pays for itself in time alone and makes configuration much easier.
Once you get one you can easily take the cover off your H34x and plug it in.
Important: Make sure you jump the “BIOS unlock jumper on the Acer EasyStore”. The jumper is located in different places on the motherboard depending on your unit and is usually without a jumper to start, so just look for the two pins near the CPU and chances are you will be correct.
At this time, plug in your keyboard, mouse and monitor (you do have the option to use a USB mouse and keyboard, however, there are times the drivers do not load during the install, so it’s best to have an older ps2 mouse and keyboard or and all in one like my compaq server keyboard) and turn it on.
